I attended my first big technology event since joining EMC this week. VMworld 2011 in Copenhagen.
I arrived here on Monday afternoon and this has been my first opportunity to sit down at a keyboard and actually get some thoughts down on the event, which should give you some flavour as to how insanely packed my agenda has been.
For me, the program so far has been something like this:
Attended the VMworld preview and pre-event kick off with EMC’s EMEA vSpecialist organisation. The SVP with global responsibility for our Service Provider Program was presenting and I was being introduced to this very important group of virtualisation technical and sales specialists. I already knew a lot people at the event from their involvement in Service Provider virtualisation and cloud projects that I had worked on over the last year, but it was great to be able to put faces to a few conference-call voices. The vSpecialist Team is a fantastic organisation and does great work in helping EMC’s customers get the maximum possible return from their on premise VMware infrastructure and compatible Service Provider operated cloud services.
Met with 5 Service Providers! Three scheduled meetings with EMC Executives and a couple of ad-hoc sessions with service providers that were interested in the SP Program.
Accompanied one of our Service Provider partners whilst they filmed a video case study with EMC’s Studio E team. These are the guys that do all of EMC’s case studies and maintain all our our customer references globally. This was actually a lot of fun!
Watched the keynote from VMware CTO and SVP R&D Stephen Herrod (@herrod). The main piece of new content in this was the announcement of the launch of a set of new VMware management suites. Steve has blogged about these here.
I also had a chance to catch up with Scott Lowe (@scott_lowe) about a (currently secret) technology project that I am trying to get going with EMC and VMware to prove out the integration of some EMC and VMware products for a Service Provider that wants to integrate them into their reference architecture. I will probably write another post about this when it’s all done, documented and can be talked about.
The evening was an EMC customer event, where I met, I’d guess, another 4 or 5 customers before leaving exhausted at around 9:30pm. Exciting eh?
Four more meetings with Service Providers today. I also (amazingly) had time to go to a session, and one that previewed a technology that is going to be very very important to Service Providers in the future at that! VSP3205 — Technology Preview: VMware vStorage APIs for VM and Application Granular Data – Satyam Vaghani, Vijay Ramachandran. More on this tomorrow, when I have had some sleep and I am in more of refreshed state of mind.
It’s 9pm right now and I am skipping the VMworld Party as I am exhausted…. again.
Really need to work on my tech-conference event stamina.
