AWS User Group UK meetup #8 – 12 March

By | March 17, 2014

I went along to my first AWS user group meetup in London last week so I thought I would do a quick write-up and share my experiences. I also want to have a reference point to direct people to that might be interested in starting an AWS user group in their city, or perhaps one focused a specific  topic like this RedShift meetup that started recently in London.

As you might expect, the AWS user group in London is the largest here in the UK. You can find details of the group membership and those that signed up to come to the meetup last week here on meetup.com.

Given the number of people that came along to the meetup, which was around 140 people, we were super-lucky that last week’s event was sponsored and hosted by News UK Technology. As a result of their generosity the meetup was held in their event space on the 13th floor of the News UK building in London. Beer and pizza (mandatory user group rations) and stunning views of St Katherine’s Dock, the Thames and the Shard were provided for free by News UK!

There were two themes for this particular meetup. After a welcome from News UK IT Director, Chris Birch, News UK Technology had a couple of speakers that shared their experiences in implementing and operating their applications on AWS. After this, speakers from Just Eat and News UK Technology talked about their visit to the Amazon Web Services’ global customer and partner conference, re:Invent, which took place in November last year. Lastly I gave a quick talk that recapped the major announcements from re:Invent and gave an update on their status and some examples of early adoption by AWS customers.

I’ve included some photos from the meetup that were taken and tweeted by the organiser, Norm Driskell, and links to the presentation content from the event that the presenters have made available as well as the video that I used to show an example of an AWS Customer that is using Amazon AppStream in this post. This should help you get a feel for the content that was shared.

If you’re interested in sponsoring or starting an AWS User Group or helping to organise an existing one, let me know in the comments and let’s talk about how we can work together and don’t worry if you’re outside the UK – I know the right people to help you wherever you happen to be located!

Presentation Content

Most of the content from the event has been made available online, so here links to the presentations or embedded content where that’s possible :) There’s one presentation that I didn’t receive a link for yet, but I will share this one too when I get it.
